Ports of Malaya: Filipino Ragnarok Players will Surely Love

If you really know where “Semidoppel” get its name, then you are one of my old buddies who knew me very well. It is my Guillotine Cross’ name in Philippine Ragnarok Online, an experimental speed type guillotine cross, an apprentice of -=]Suddenly[=-, my main GX. Yes, yours truly is a certified Ragnarok Online addict and I’m using an account which I use since beta days. Finally, the upcoming patch will put enthusiasm and Filipino Ragnarok players will surely love, an episode where the map’s themes are based on the Philippines. I have read that there are some Philippine trademarks in this patch, he mentioned the famous “jeepneys” and the Rizal Park can be seen here.

The Ports of Malaya (Ports of Freedom), a Philippine-themed map was made by Gravity and as of now it was launched in kRO Sakray Test Servers. The recent patch they made was putting the new monsters which were monsters based on Filipino mythical creatures. As of now I can say that most monsters in this patch will be “Demon” type, so folks prepare your weapons and gears to combat these mythical creatures. Where’s the sample image? Here it is!

Monster Names: Wakwak, Engakanto, Bungisngis, Manananggal, Buwaya, Tiyanak, Mangkukulam, Tikbalang, Bangungot

Wondering about the MVP monster here? The gigantic “Bakunawa” who might be as large as Satan Morroc is a mythical creature who was believed the cause of eclipses by swallowing the moon. The creature’s power is not yet confirmed, but I think with that size, you’ll need to have lots of guildsmen to defeat it.

As of now, there’s no exact launch date on when will this patch will be experienced by Filipino gamers. Tell this news to your Ragnarok friends ( even those who already quit, retired, semi-retired players) and invite them again to play the game (even though this time it’s the reign of the “Convert and Receive” series LOL). Mga Larong Pambata: Are Children Nowadays Still Playing Them?

I don’t know if I am just becoming older or maybe time runs so fast. But I think I am not that old not to notice how and what children play nowadays. I noticed that only few children are still playing the “larong pambata” that I used to play, we used to play. One time, my buddies and I have a drinking session and when we are having a conversation we reminisce our childhood moments.

One pal told us that he can still remember those times when they were playing “tagu-taguan” every evening and sometimes they play it during brownouts…making it harder for the “taya” to look for them. He also shared to us those times when they were playing “moro-moro” and it’s always BOYS versus GIRLS.

My other buddy shared his experience when they were playing “patintero” wherein he wants to join a team who has members with long arms (LOL that’s obviously an advantage). All they need is a stick that they will use to carve lines across the ground, and if they will play on a cemented floor all they need is a rock, sometimes they use water, but usually they use charcoal (uling).

Then my other pal told how easy it was to start a game. One will ask if what game do they want to play and it will be decided by raising the hands of those who want that certain game to be played. “Ma-out, taya!”, “Kampihan!”, “Maalis… taya, hindi magbago…taya!”

Do kids nowadays know this?

Some children nowadays are unfamiliar with them, and I bet they are more familiar with PSP, PC Games, Online Games and even mobile games. Today’s technology changes almost everything, no doubt about it. It even has an impact to the “larong pambata” I am pertaining to. It somehow replaces them and as a result, these games are slowly ignored and might be forgotten. I am not fully against these new types of games, but as I can see, there’s something we should be aware of…violence in games. I know you can relate if I told you that there’s a 7-year old son who knows how to play DOTA, Counterstrike and even MMORPGs. Let’s face the harsh reality that these games are not suitable for children with that age. I can say that I am fortunate that I experienced almost all of the “larong pambata”, and now that I am in this age, I can say that I am also happy to experience these new types of games/gaming. Yes, we should move on as technology tells us to, but moving on doesn’t mean that we should forget the kind of life we enjoyed from the past. One more thing, today’s games are ended when the battery runs out, or there’s no internet connection or when it is brownout, but during our time every game was ended by the most powerful and irresistible people…and that’s our “Nanay at Taytay”. All they do is yell, “Mga anak, tama na, gabi na, bukas ulit”, and that’s the signal for “GAME OVER”.

Top Things that Parents Need Check in Their Children’s Online Games

More and more kids are playing online games these days, even children as young as 2 are now familiar with gaming. Kids are definitely hooked with these games – especially extreme violent ones that are oftentimes top-sellers. Children are also increasing their time in front of the computer thus ruling out other recreational activities offline. Research shows that kids are spending approximately a maximum of 13 hours per week on playing online. The sad fact is, most of these games are of violent nature and with violence comes the possibility of thrusting the child to aggression in the real world.

So what should parents do? Below are top things parents should put to mind and check before giving your child the go signal.

• Before your kids start playing online, be sure your computer has the right activated security suite: firewall, anti-spyware and anti-virus software for protection.

• Check a game’s ESRB rating before letting your child play, but keep in mind that the rating doesn’t reflect user-generated content that children come upon during online play. Stated below are rules by the Entertainment Software Ratings Board regarding video games/online games:
- EC stands for “early childhood.” This means that games in this category are suitable for ages 3 and up. Contains no substance that parents may find improper for kids.
- E stands for “everyone.” And is suitable for kids ages 6 and up. Games may include slight violence, rib-tickling mischief and/or minor language.
- E10+ stands for “everyone 10 and older.” Kids ages 10 and up can play games with this rating. In this category, titles may contain more animation, make-believe or mild aggression, trivial language, and minimal indecent themes.
- T stands for “teen.” This means that it is only appropriate for kids ages 13 and up. It could comprise content of violent nature, mild or intense language, and suggestive subject matter.
- M stands for “mature.” Games with this rating are apt for persons ages 17 and up. They may have adult sexual themes; violence is more extreme and have intense language.
- AO stands for “adults only.” Games with this rating have contents fit for adults only. They may include profane sexual innuendo. -
- RP stands for “rating pending.” This means that the games have been submitted and are waiting in line to be rated.

• Think beyond the box. It pays to read rating summaries and brief descriptions of the game. You can always look this up online and check online game review sites for reviews, feedbacks and more information about the game.

• Preview the games by yourself first. Even with the ratings and all the reviews available online, it’s still best for a parent to test the game first before letting your kids play. Game ratings may not match what you feel is appropriate for your child.

• Look for the educational value in choosing online games for your kids. It would be much better if the games your kids are playing are information rich and teach certain values and skills. Take online cooking games for example. They’re fun, educational and easy to play.

• Check if your kids have strong passwords for their gaming accounts. Passwords should be difficult to fathom. Make sure your kids know and remind them all the time that they may not send out any materials to fellow gamers that contain private information and/or data.

• Explain to your child the importance of reporting a cyberbully. Instruct them to keep a record of the conversation if they are being pestered and encourage them not to engage in a conversation with the bully.

In the end, nothing beats good parental guidance. Parental involvement in our children’s media usage can reduce the impact of media violence on our children.

Counter Strike: Global Offensive Trailer

One of the most popular shooter games we ever experience is Counter Strike and I myself became an addict to this game. I can still remember my first time playing this first-person shooting game during my high school days. I spent lots of hours and lots of allowances just to be an efficient Counter Strike player. During those days, if you don’t know how to play Counter Strike you’re not “IN”, you should know what weapon will be chosen if you tap they “Buy” key and the designated number of the weapon you want. For example, “Buy” key-3-1 automatically you purchased MP5Navy, “Buy” key-4-6, we call it “One Shot” the one use for sniping, “Buy” key-4-3 you purchased Carbine.

Recently, an upcoming Counter Strike version titled “Counter Strike: Global Offensive” released a teaser trailer, and all I can say is wow! Comparing it to the version I played before, I can honestly say that it has a huge difference, and lots of improvements were made. I guess the developers of this version want to match or even dominate Call of Duty. By the way, this game will be released on the first quarter of 2012.

Google Plus, Now with Games and Promises Never to Spam your Page

Google plus have included time-wasters on their social network, what I mean is they now added games (LOL). There’s a difference between Facebook and Google+ in this feature, Google+ promises that they won’t spam your stream. How? All your gamer-related messages can be seen on a separate “tab” a “Games tab” which is the same as the Home, Profile, Circles etc. When you click that tab you will see game updates, game invites and even the recent game played by your friend.
