Here’s another surprise! I know you are familiar with my Blogger Quotes but most of them are in Tagalog. This time I decided to make Bloggers’ Proverbs in English so bloggers from other countries can relate and understand them. Aside from that, a commenter suggested that putting images with my proverbs , might help to make it more appealing and probably might go viral (I’m hoping). Thanks for the suggestion sir, you know who you are and you are right, they look better than the previous editions. I never imagine that I will do this pose in my entire life, but boredom and hunger can really trigger something unusual, telling my mind to do silly stuffs. This time for the sake of fun, I tried this pose, and take note, I, I mean WE did it at the airport.

We arrived in Iloilo last December 28, 2011 and due to the two hours of flight delay we were the last group of people who left the airport. We have lots of baggage so we have no choice but to wait for our service to return and take us to our apartment. We were so hungry that time and bored at the same time, so to kill our boredom we thought of taking picture of ourselves doing the “PLANKING” thingy.

Finally, my mini observatory mechanism functioned again (aka brain) and this time I have observed the importance of the term “Joke lang” (Just Joking). We Filipinos are so clever that we can reverse awkward situations and sometimes make it even a winning moment. JOKE LANG- A very useful term which can be used in different types of conversations but the most important thing to keep in mind is the perfect timing on when you will say the certain phrase. One more thing, you should be very observant, because observing the initial reaction will trigger you to say it on the right time. One more importance of this phrase is you can determine the probability between a negative and a positive outcome. But always keep in mind that jokes are half meant.

Here are some observations about the use of this term:

• To Avoid Rejection – Boys usually use this term if wants to know if he can court the girl he likes. He will say, “Puwede bang manligaw?” then if the girl he asked made a frown or an awkward reaction he must say “Joke lang” before that girl’s response or else he might hear “Ay sorry, hindi kita type” or “Dude hindi tayo talo”. But at the moment he asked and that girl just smiled, then it’s a positive feedback. Winning moment!

• To Avoid Hurting Someone’s Feelings – Some of us probably are guilty of this. Most “taklesa” (tactless people) can’t help themselves not to describe a person’s physical appearance. The most common example is this, “Ei, alam mo ang taba mo ngayon”, then when that certain person he’s talking with made a frown, the one who greeted will say “joke lang ‘yun no” so that there will be no more argument.

• To tell what we really want to tell – I’ll pick the “Puwede ba manligaw?” as an example. I don’t know if this instance is familiar to you girls. Have you experienced this moment when you’re best friend or one of your closest buddies ask this to you. Believe me, the intention is 90% true. Even though he will say “Joke lang”, still at the back of his mind he has this “Kung makakalusot lang” thingy. How about this scenario when you tell someone that he is fat then you’ll say that you’re just joking but actually this is what you really want to tell… “yes, you are”.

• To hide the true feelings or emotions – this one is critical, we should be sensitive about this. Sometimes we offend people and to make my point clear, let me have this situation as an example. You told someone that he has a bad breath (assuming that it is not true) then that person will say “sakit mo naman magsalita”, then you noticed that his emotion changed in an instant. After that, the person who got offended will say “joke lang, ok lang ako”, beware and keep this in mind, he just said it so that he will feel better after the hurtful words you said. It’s his primary defense so that it won’t hurt much.

If you can notice, the joke lang phrase has a psychological effect both to the person involved during the conversation. It depends on how and when it will be said. But also keep this in mind, never say that phrase to someone who is not close to you, or else you might be in trouble. I hope you like this article…another Filipino trait observation.

Gay lingo is a set of vocabulary words which was invented mostly by gay men and is now used mostly by Filipinos whether if they are gay or not. They are created by omitting some parts of the original words and replacing them with terms which can be English, Tagalog, Visayan and sometimes even Japanese. I can still recall when my girlfriend and I watched “Zombadings”, I was very thankful that there’s a subtitle whenever the characters are talking using gay lingo. It is really hard to decipher what they are talking about, because if you just accept it literally, I bet that you can’t have a very meaningful result.

What does this mean?  “I-Deadma Bonnevie ko na lang at never na ako mag-Mac Arthur sa kanya!”, now did you get my point? This simply means that “I will ignore (deadma) and will never return to him/her, (from Mac Arthur’s famous line “I shall return”).

Though these words sounds silly and funny some find it irritating, honestly the first time I heard these gay lingo terms I was really irritated. But as time goes by, unknowingly I already get used to it and unnoticeably I was already using some of them.

How GAY LINGO helps Filipinos?

• When we don’t know or forget the actual word/term or even the name of a person we say “Chorva”. Just like the usual instances here in my office when someone will inform an employee that there’s a visitor looking for her/him.

Employee 1: May naghahanap sa iyo kanina.

Employee 2: Sino ‘yung naghahanap?

Employee 1: Si ano…si..ung matangkad..’ung si CHORVA.

Employee 2: Ahhh si Sir…(name)

Employee 1: Oo ‘yun nga…sya nga.

See what I mean? Also…

• Gay lingo prevents us from saying or using explicit words, we often use nag-Chorvahan or Kembelar when we pertains to a sexual act
• Defining how big or small a body part is such as walanjo, medjo and mountain dew (use your imagination in this part)
• It also prevents us from hurting someone’s feelings, gay lingo have descriptive words we can use if we can’t help ourselves to tell what we see and these are: Jubis (obese), chaka(ugly), fayatollah (for skinny people), thunder cats or thunders (for old people)

Here are some Gay Lingo terms and their meanings.

They also have Gay versions of folk songs, one example is Pen-pen de Sarapen (Gay Version)

Anyway, it’s up to you if you will use them or not, this is just another phase in Filipino culture. We have passed the “repapips era” then last year’s “jejemon era” and now the “bekimon era”. Honestly, no one can stop it. Don’t worry because every era has an end, but for now we have no choice but to cope with it.

Lots of “pauso” nowadays suddenly came out, we have planking, owling, manning and the recent one made by Pinoys (which is absolutely funny) is called “bakling”. By the way I just want to clear things first, I’m not against those funny poses, I don’t want to be called a “killjoy” person (LOL). As people go nuts doing those stuffs, I think there is something that should be the new trend. The only difference about this new trend I was saying is that, this one should never be forgotten and should always be in practice. What is this new trend I am talking about?
I call it “THINKING”. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not telling you to pose acting that you are thinking, I am pertaining to the actual state. Some say that it is the ability to reason, a cause and effect in the mind, some say that it is the skill of using intelligence to get things done and experts say that it is the ability of the brain to execute processes in any activity which requires intelligence.

But I define thinking as:

• Not making an anti-planking bill because I know there are lots of laws and bills more important to discuss
• Not trying to cross a flooded street and when you got stuck you will blame everyone, telling them that you were not informed
• Evacuating your home if it is really time to evacuate because your life or your family’s life might be in danger in times of calamities
• Not taking pictures in the area of a crime scene making it a tourist spot and not posting it in your Facebook wall neither uploading the pictures in your profile.
• Not making a hostage taker mad by taking his brother making him a police accessory
Sadly, only few people know how to think… even though we all have brains. Sometimes we don’t have to think depper, all we need is common sense, but still only few people know how to use it. Let us all make thinking as a hobby!
By the way, this article is an “on-the spot” one, I just thought of it when I updated my Facebook wall when I leave this message, “Nauso na ang planking…may owling pa…bakit hindi ipauso ang “THINKING”.
