Anatomy of Crab Mentality: Most Filipinos Do it on Festivity

What are the common things you observed when reading Yahoo news comment or feedback section? Well to hit straight on my point, let’s specify the Yahoo Philippines News – Yes, you’ll be annoyed just like what happen every time I open my web browser though I can’t help not to read the comment section since there’s like a magnet that pulls me through (and very forceful I guess) and read it anyway possible.

Usually you’ll get this feeling you read something good happen to a certain personality and you’ll feel aloof for them – for their success then suddenly annoyed when you read most of the comments are all negative towards certain individuality. I’m not going to say it since I feel ashamed though I should – They call it “Crab Mentality.”

Crab Mentality is a way of thinking best described by the phrase….”If I can’t have it, neither can you”. It’s a metaphor referring to a pot of crabs in which one of them tries to escape and instead is pulled down by the rest of them. The point in referring crabs in the pot – it has to do with the fact that if you’re in a situation like don’t try to squeeze your way out of it because everyone else will just pull you back into the problem but even deeper than before.

Let’s dig in a much deeper accounts, I did research online on the idea and line of crab mentality and it is so repulsive that “crab mentality” is often associated with Filipinos worldwide. Yes, if it’s twitter – we Filipinos are the undisputed top trending worldwide for the hash tag #CrabMentality.

The term “crab mentality” is used to describe a kind of selfish, short-sighted thinking which runs along the lines of “if I can’t have it, neither can you (referred to previous phrase).” This term is especially widely used among Filipinos, who use it specifically to refer to people who pull other people down, denigrating them rather than letting them get ahead or pursue their dreams.

“As a general rule, an accusation of having a crab mentality is a poor reflection on someone’s personality.”

This concept references an interesting occurrence which happens in buckets of crabs. If one crab attempts to escape from a bucket of live crabs, the other crabs will pull it back down, rather than allowing it to get free. Sometimes, the crabs seem almost malicious, waiting until the crab has almost escaped before yanking it back into the pot. All of the crabs are undoubtedly aware of the fact that their fate is probably not going to be very pleasurable, so people are led to wonder why they pull each other back into the bucket, instead of congratulating the clever escape artist.

Factors proximity to being a Crab Mentality State

1 – Envy and Jealousy – These is the major factor I guess so I don’t have to explain it.
2 – Redefining Individuality – in a way that somebody negates others in order to define h/she is different from that certain individual.
3 – Resentment – planting hatred to somebody and never have the time to forgive, that’s certainly a not lost cause.
4 – Greediness – This explains “if I can’t have it, neither can you!” in a worst way.
5 – Selfishness and Self-indulgence – it’s just that there are people who just feel happy and indulge when they pull someone downward.

Achievement equals pride, and pride involves pleasure on the part of the achiever. Self-actualization is a human necessity – accordingly, it is normal. The questions that must be involved with these behaviour or way of thinking: How happy are you scrutinizing others achieve their goals? How do you sense seeing people thrive in their deeds? Do you appreciate the accomplishments of people around you? Are you glad with someone else’s success?

Whether we agree to it or not, if we self-assess today and reflect that we actually or secretly feel sorry about seeing nice things happening to people, chances are, we are guilty of the loathsome trait of crab mentality!

Thyroid Cancer: A Very Serious Matter

Taking thyroid cancer seriously

With the increasing incidence rate of thyroid cancer in Metro Cebu, the Eduardo J. Aboitiz Cancer Center (EJACC) of the Ramon Aboitiz Foundation Inc. (RAFI) urged the public to undergo early screening and prevention measures to fight the disease.

“Thyroid cancer is high on prognosis. It is preventable through various screening methods, such as physical examination and ultrasound of the neck, as well as some prevention measures, including regular exercise and maintenance of a well-balanced diet,” Ronald delos Reyes, EJACC program coordinator, said.

Based on EJACC’s Metro Cebu Population-based Cancer Registry, the incidence rate of thyroid cancer in 2003 to 2007 is high but the mortality rate is comparatively lower.

Within this period, about 573 cases of thyroid cancer were reported and 116 were recorded to have died of the disease. The figures also show that 97 cases have been attributed to persons in between the ages 15-30 while 350 cases are persons with ages 30-60. More women than men have been affected by this disease; in fact, 134 cases are male while 439 cases are female.

As a common type of cancer diagnosed in men and women, thyroid cancer ranked sixth in most common cancer cases in Metro Cebu.

According to the 2010 journal of the Philippine Cancer Facts and Estimates of the Philippine Cancer Society, the incidence rate had increased from 1980 to 2002, with an annual change of 0.4% in males and 1.6% among females.

Thyroid cancer is the most common cancer of women at ages 15-24 years. Among women, the incidence rate rises at age 30 and continues to rise with increasing age. Among men, the incidence rate begins to increase much later, starting at 60 years old.

The thyroid is a butterfly-shaped gland located in the front of the neck just below the Adam’s apple. It works like a tiny factory that uses iodine, mostly from the diet in foods like seafood and salt, to produce thyroid hormones that, in turn, help regulate the body’s growth and metabolism and other functions of the body.

The most common signs and symptoms of thyroid cancer include a lump or thyroid nodule, that can be felt in the neck; trouble in swallowing; throat or neck pain; swollen lymph nodes in the neck; cough; and vocal changes.

People exposed to high levels of radiation are much more likely than others to develop papillary or follicular thyroid cancer. Treatment with x-rays is one significant source of radiation exposure. Between the 1920s and the 1950s, doctors used high-dose x-rays to treat children who had enlarged tonsils, acne, and other problems affecting the head and neck. Later, scientists found that some people who had received this kind of treatment developed thyroid cancer.

People who are diagnosed with this kind of cancer may undergo surgery. Common surgeries include thyroidectory, lobectomy, and tracheostomy. Sometimes, even the removal of the thyroid itself is needed.

“Like many other cancers, thyroid cancer may be more easily cured with early detection. Earlier diagnosis removes thyroid cancer at a time when they are not likely to have spread beyond the thyroid gland,” delos Reyes said.

Planking Like a Boss

I never imagine that I will do this pose in my entire life, but boredom and hunger can really trigger something unusual, telling my mind to do silly stuffs. This time for the sake of fun, I tried this pose, and take note, I, I mean WE did it at the airport.

We arrived in Iloilo last December 28, 2011 and due to the two hours of flight delay we were the last group of people who left the airport. We have lots of baggage so we have no choice but to wait for our service to return and take us to our apartment. We were so hungry that time and bored at the same time, so to kill our boredom we thought of taking picture of ourselves doing the “PLANKING” thingy.

Public Service: Personal Protective Equipment for Local Workers in the Philippines

Here’s something new from Semidoppel’s Reports! As part of my belief that blogging is a form of journalism, I will be including public service reports on this site. In this way I can help my fellow Filipinos, I’ll do my best to help them to become aware on some aspects which are sometimes taken for granted. Welcome to my online journal!

I already noticed this long time ago, and I was unaware that time. My questions were answered when I started to have this field of work I am currently in.

I am pertaining to local laborers or workers who are working without the use of personal protective equipments. By the way, what are these Personal Protective Equipments (PPEs)? These PPEs are composed of simple gadgets/equipments which served as barriers for hazardous conditions (e.g. safety goggles, hardhats, earplugs, safety shoes, safety harness, etc). I am just wondering, are the employers of these workers aware about the rule/law about personal protective equipment safety and devices? Are they even aware about safety at work?

Here’s what I found!

RULE 1080
PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT AND DEVICES

1081: General Provisions:

1081.01: Every employer as defined in 1002:

(1)Shall at his own expense furnish his workers with protective equipment for the eyes, face, hands and feet, protective shields and barriers whenever necessary by reason of the hazardous nature of the process or environment, chemical or radiological or other mechanical irritants or hazards capable of causing injury or impairment in the function of any part of the body through absorption, inhalation or physical contact.

(2) Deduction for the loss or damage of personal protective equipment shall be governed by Article

114, Book III, Labor Code of the Philippines, and Section 14, Rule VIII, Book III, Omnibus Rules Implementing the Labor Code.

1081.02: All personal protective equipment shall be of the approved design and construction appropriate for the exposure and the work to be performed.

1081.03: The employer shall be responsible for the adequacy and proper maintenance of personal protective equipment used in his workplace.

1081.04: No person shall be subjected or exposed to a hazardous environmental condition without protection.

It is very clear that PPEs should be issued to each worker and it should be free. They are obliged to do this because it was mandated by law and it should be followed. Safety of the workers should be the primary concern by these employers, and it is also the right of the workers to decline a job whenever a hazardous condition on the work place is present. Employers should think that safety is an investment and never an expense. One more thing, the PPEs that will be issued should pass safety standards, PPEs are made from durable materials and designed to withstand different hazardous environment.

SAFETY is an INVESTMENT and never an EXPENSE. Though issuing of these PPEs requires budget, it should be categorized as an investment. Workers are the primary assets of an employer so he should protect their welfare.

Imagine what might happen if there are no:

Hardhats to protect your head from falling debris
Safety shoes that will prevent foot injuries due to slips and trips
Safety goggles that will serve as a barrier to protect you from dusts and other minute particles
Ear plugs that will minimize noise, helping you to avoid deafness
Safety harness that might save your life when working on heights
SCBA (Self-contained Breathing Apparatus) that will provide air, preventing asphyxiation

If the rules stated above are neglected by an employer, a worker can report it to DOLE (Department of Labor and Employment) and take note, it is punishable by law.

JOKE Lang: The Reversal Tactic Explained

Finally, my mini observatory mechanism functioned again (aka brain) and this time I have observed the importance of the term “Joke lang” (Just Joking). We Filipinos are so clever that we can reverse awkward situations and sometimes make it even a winning moment. JOKE LANG- A very useful term which can be used in different types of conversations but the most important thing to keep in mind is the perfect timing on when you will say the certain phrase. One more thing, you should be very observant, because observing the initial reaction will trigger you to say it on the right time. One more importance of this phrase is you can determine the probability between a negative and a positive outcome. But always keep in mind that jokes are half meant.

Here are some observations about the use of this term:

To Avoid Rejection – Boys usually use this term if wants to know if he can court the girl he likes. He will say, “Puwede bang manligaw?” then if the girl he asked made a frown or an awkward reaction he must say “Joke lang” before that girl’s response or else he might hear “Ay sorry, hindi kita type” or “Dude hindi tayo talo”. But at the moment he asked and that girl just smiled, then it’s a positive feedback. Winning moment!

To Avoid Hurting Someone’s Feelings – Some of us probably are guilty of this. Most “taklesa” (tactless people) can’t help themselves not to describe a person’s physical appearance. The most common example is this, “Ei, alam mo ang taba mo ngayon”, then when that certain person he’s talking with made a frown, the one who greeted will say “joke lang ‘yun no” so that there will be no more argument.

To tell what we really want to tell – I’ll pick the “Puwede ba manligaw?” as an example. I don’t know if this instance is familiar to you girls. Have you experienced this moment when you’re best friend or one of your closest buddies ask this to you. Believe me, the intention is 90% true. Even though he will say “Joke lang”, still at the back of his mind he has this “Kung makakalusot lang” thingy. How about this scenario when you tell someone that he is fat then you’ll say that you’re just joking but actually this is what you really want to tell… “yes, you are”.

To hide the true feelings or emotions – this one is critical, we should be sensitive about this. Sometimes we offend people and to make my point clear, let me have this situation as an example. You told someone that he has a bad breath (assuming that it is not true) then that person will say “sakit mo naman magsalita”, then you noticed that his emotion changed in an instant. After that, the person who got offended will say “joke lang, ok lang ako”, beware and keep this in mind, he just said it so that he will feel better after the hurtful words you said. It’s his primary defense so that it won’t hurt much.

If you can notice, the joke lang phrase has a psychological effect both to the person involved during the conversation. It depends on how and when it will be said. But also keep this in mind, never say that phrase to someone who is not close to you, or else you might be in trouble. I hope you like this article…another Filipino trait observation.
