Haiti Quake, Death Toll Might Reach 100,000

Last Wednesday, Haiti’s Prime Minister Jean-Max Bellerive said that the death toll might reach 100,000. The capital of Port-au-Prince was mostly destroyed by the earthquake leaving hospitals and schools collapsed, resulting to trapped victims and many dead people crushed in buildings.  The 7.0 earthquake intensity made it more difficult for medical people to give aid to those affected because the hospitals are also destroyed by the quake’s rage.

Different nations are now sending help, this includes:

  • A major international relief operation was put underway with the United States, France, Britain and Canada
  • US President Barack Obama sent help for the search and rescue operation
  • The US military on Wednesday mobilized ships, aircraft and expert teams due to arrive within hours to help the relief effort
  • An aircraft carrier, the USS Carl Vinson, was on the way and due to arrive Thursday
  • Planeloads of rescue teams and relief supplies were quickly dispatched from nations including Britain, Canada, Russia, Spain, France, Germany, the Netherlands and Russia
