Manila, Philippines: On a recent Social Weather Stations (SWS) Survey last December 2013 where 1,550 adults all over the Philippines were asked about what they prefer most: a partner who is good looking but does not have a sense of humor or someone who is not blessed with a beautiful/handsome face but with a sense of humor. The survey says that nine (9) out of ten (10) Filipinos prefer someone who has a sense of humor over someone who is good looking but can’t make you laugh. Well, I am not surprised with the results but what really grind my gears are the responses of the people who were interviewed on why they choose that option. The result of evaluation seems to be a comparison between good and evil. I am not against the result neither wants to defend that the good looking people should be dominant in terms of having relationship and love but I will enumerate some unpleasant aspects I’ve observed in the survey.

The problem with this survey: Do you know what the problem with this kind of survey? It’s too narrow, the aspects of comparison are really narrow that there‘s no room for “what ifs”. Probably it was designed that way to check what will be the first thing that a person might think of. But in reality, this is not applicable, unreliable and unfair, why? Let’s experiment using the tables below.

Let’s begin with:

Good Looking

Not-so-Good Looking

No sense of Humor Good sense of Humor

Obviously, in this scenario, more people will choose the Not-so-good looking ones.

But in reality, even if we add a single good value on each person, things will definitely change.

Good Looking

Not-so-Good Looking

No sense of Humor Good sense of Humor
God-fearing God-fearing

Now, tell me, which do you prefer? Let’s torture our brains once more by adding more good values on both sides.

Good Looking

Not-so-Good Looking

No sense of Humor Good sense of Humor
God-fearing God-fearing
Talented Talented
Intelligent Intelligent
Hardworking Hardworking

Ok, now tell me, which will you choose? This time, let me put some bad attitude, of course I’ll omit the “God-fearing” trait.

Good Looking

Not-so-Good Looking

No sense of Humor Good sense of Humor
Talented Talented
Intelligent Intelligent
Hardworking Hardworking
Drunkard Drunkard
Satyriasic/Nymphomaniac (Sex Addict) Satyriasic/Nymphomaniac (Sex Addict)

Lastly, the succeeding comparisons below probably show the hardest part because we don’t want our partners to have negative values, right? In applying this to real life, I’ll let you decide on who you think is still best to choose.

Good Looking

Not-so-Good Looking

No sense of Humor Good sense of Humor
No Vice at all Drunkard
Have Self Control/Discipline Satyriasic/Nymphomaniac (Sex Addict)

Good Looking

Not-so-Good Looking

No sense of Humor Good sense of Humor
Drunkard Drunkard
Satyriasic/Nymphomaniac (Sex Addict) Satyriasic/Nymphomaniac (Sex Addict)

Good Looking

Not-so-Good Looking

No sense of Humor Good sense of Humor
Drunkard No Vice at all
Satyriasic/Nymphomaniac (Sex Addict) Have Self Control/Discipline

Why do I create the comparisons above? It is for us to weigh things on which we might choose on different scenarios.  Also, these comparisons showed the different possibilities or the different “what ifs” that are not applied on the survey.

A little bit of Hypocrisy: Sorry, but I smell a little bit of hypocrisy (but not to all who were asked) on this comparison. Basically, because we all know that the first aspect on how a person becomes attracted to someone is via physical appearance. I never heard someone said “Oh, he’s so ugly, I think I am in love with him”.  No pun intended, but this is reality. As long as we do not know the true personality of a person, we can never tell who is better than whom. For example: What if a member of the favorite K-Pop group you really like has no sense of humor and at the same time there is this funny, average-looking- schoolmate asked you for a date, who will you choose?

Unwanted Stereotypes: One of the negative effects on having such surveys are the unwanted stereotypes that emerge. Good looking people tend to be seen as dull and boring when it comes to relationship while the humorous but not-so-good-looking ones are always fun to be with.

I am unsure if you’ll agree with me that the survey is somehow “one sided”, but that’s how I really see it (sorry). I just wished that the survey will not affect the reality that there are good-looking people who also have a good sense of humor and I know many of them. I also wished that good-looking people won’t experience such unwanted stereotypes, it’s not their fault that they are be born that way. To those who are not-so-good looking but blessed with a very good sense of humor, may the survey boost your confidence even more, prove to the people that beauty is just skin deep, what matters most is character and how you will love your partner with faithfulness and loyalty.

In the end, always, it’s a matter of weighing what attracts us more out of the totality of someone’s personality. Personally, I don’t go for looks. Never. I go for sense. Whether that be sense of humor or common sense, a sensible guy is the best pick. The best trait a partner can possess is that they trust, respect, and love you. Regardless of their lacking, these traits would eventually lead to better treatment of their partners. Nice post, pards!
