The Philippines is the Best Asian Country for Women

Page 1 Page 2 Page 3

Out of 165 countries, the Philippines placed 17th on the recent ranking performed by Newsweek and Jesse Ellison of The Daily Beast. The ranking is about the “Best Places to be a Woman” and among all Asian countries, the Philippines is the only country who made it to the top 20. Several factors were considered before they come up with the rankings, this includes the laws for women, women in politics, employment rate of women, education and health.

Laws for Women…research mode. As I try to find laws concerning the women’s welfare here in the Philippines, I can say that we really have lots of them. Laws about employment, marriage/family, political, health & social welfare already exist. So I only pick some of them (if I put all of them here this post will look like a novel).

  • Republic Act No. 6955 – “An Act to Declare Unlawful the Practice of Matching Filipino Women for Marriage to Foreign Nationals on Mail-Order Basis and other Similar Practices, Including the Advertisement, Publication, Printing or Distribution of Brochures, Fliers and Other Propaganda Materials in Furtherance Thereof and Providing Penalty Therefor”
  • Republic Act No. 8353 – “An Act Expanding the Definition of the Crime of Rape, Reclassifying the Same as a Crime Against Persons, Amending for the Purpose Act No. 3815, as Amended, Otherwise Known as the Revised Penal Code, and for Other Purposes” (Also known as the “Anti-Rape Law of 1997″) – This reclassifies rape from a “crime against chastity” to a “crime against persons.”
  • Republic Act No. 9262 – “An Act Defining Violence Against Women and Their Children, Providing for Protective Measures for Victims, Prescribing Penalties Therefor and for Other Purposes” (Also known as “Anti-Violence Against Women and their Children Act of 2004′”)

Employment. There are also laws about women’s employment rights, benefits and many more. I can’t really see if the employment rate is good because as of July 2009, the total unemployment rate in the Philippines is 7.6%. I also checked some graphs and I found out that this unemployment rate is decreasing…that’s a good sign.

Politics. We were already governed by two lady presidents, gender in politics is not an issue here in the Philippines.

My point of view…

I agree that the Philippines is really one of the best countries for women. Why? For me, the culture and undying virtue that has been bestowed by our ancestors through generations is still alive and still in the hearts of many people living here in our country. Also, I think Filipinos are still chivalrous, that certain virtue should always be in mind.

This is really something that we have to be proud of. Filipino women are respected and treated equally with men, sometimes better pa nga eh unlike other women from other countries. And even during early times our babaylan are highly respected and modern times has seen our country being led by two women presidents. Hail to Filipinas! And Hail to the Philippines!
