Wedding and Marriage
Last Sunday, my girlfriend and I went to church. But earlier that day, I already went to church with my family. The topic is about MARRIAGE, it was very interesting, especially now that my girlfriend and I are already planning about it. At first I decided to write this post in Tagalog, but for the sake of my foreign readers, I will try my best to express it in English.
I heard two homilies that day, and I can say that it really caught my attention. Why? I wanted a civil wedding, but my girl wanted to have a church wedding. We argue about this several times, but because of the teachings I heard last Sunday, it changed my mind.
These are the points that the priests tackled:
1. The Civil Wedding
This kind of marriage seemed to have God taken for granted, yes it is a wedding but it prioritizes more on the laws of man more than the Laws of God. We should prioritize God above all, we all knew that but because of the changing visions in life, it seemed that “naitsa puera na natin Siya”
2. The Annulment/ Divorce
These things are better gone forever. The Bible says in
Matthew – Chapter 19:4-9
4. “Haven’t you read,” he replied, “that at the beginning the Creator ‘made them male and female,’
5. and said, ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh’?
6. So they are no longer two, but one. Therefore what God has joined together, let man not separate.”
7. “Why then, “they asked, “did Moses command that a man give his wife a certificate of divorce and send her away?”
8. Jesus replied, “Moses permitted you to divorce your wives because your hearts were hard. But it was not this way from the beginning.
9. I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for marital unfaithfulness, and marries another woman commits adultery.”
3. Choosing Priorities
There’s this story that the priest told us, there’s this man getting ready to be married, the priest asked him this “ when the boat is about to sink and you can only save one, who will you save, your mother or your wife?” The man chose his mother, and then suddenly his wife cried. He said that his mother can’t be replaced for he has only one mother, but a wife can be replaced by another. The priest didn’t like his answer and read this verse to him:
Ephesians – Chapter 5:31
As the Scriptures say, “A man leaves his father and mother and is joined to his wife, and the two are united into one.”
4. Live-in Partners
There was a man who has a live-in partner, and he refuses to get married even though he already has two kids with this woman. The woman asked the priest if what she should do. The priest told her that she better get separated to that man. The people heard what the priest said; they wonder why a priest would suggest that. The priest then explained, what they are doing is wrong, without marriage, they are just making sins all the time, two unmarried people doing what a married couple is doing is a very big mistake. Without marriage they are just dragging themselves to hell because of the sins they unnoticeably done.
These are the thoughts that made impact on me. I would like to make it clear that I’m not against the civil wedding thing. I’m in favor of it before, but these teachings really changed my view on it.
